The NSW ‘Speed Adviser’ app has received a large upgrade as part of Rural Road Safety month, with the app now set to offer visual and audio alerts to drivers when they approach a level crossing.
The app is designed to help road-users manage their speed through the delivery of visual and audible warnings when a driver exceeds the speed limit, enters a mobile speed camera zone, or enters an active school zone.
There are over 1300 public level crossings across NSW, with the app’s new feature soft launched earlier this year.
The Speed Adviser app has been downloaded 120,000 times since its launch 10 years ago.
“I want to take this opportunity during Rural Road Safety Month to remind motorists in our regions to be extra cautious on our roads,” Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison says.
“I’m pleased to see the new feature added to the Speed Adviser app. The data is also available on the Transport Open Data Hub which can feed into popular apps such as Apple Maps, Google Maps and Navman.
“While it’s a valuable tool for drivers, it’s important to remember it doesn’t replace the need for constant vigilance.
“Level crossing signs, flashing lights, boom gates and road markings are there for a reason. Drivers, riders and pedestrians must stay alert and follow the rules to keep themselves and everyone safe.”
Between July 2014 and June 2024 there were 64 collisions between road vehicles and trains at level crossings, which resulted in eight fatalities.
The announcement of the new Speed Adviser level crossing feature comes soon after Transport for NSW’s announcement it would be trialling the Rail Active Crossing System, also known as ‘RAXS’ at a level crossing near Qurindi, which upgrades the passive site with flashing lights and bells.
