No timeframe on Bruce Highway closure

Gladstone Council has warned Bruce Highway closures caused by an ammonia nitrate explosion could be in place for weeks
The current detour path for the Bruce Highway.

The Gladstone Council has warned a section of the Bruce Highway could be closed for an extended following a serious traffic incident on Friday, August 30.

A ute and truck collided on the highway causing an ammonia nitrate explosion that has severely damaged the road.

The explosion occurred roughly four hours after the collision.

Diversions could be in place for weeks due to potential difficulties caused for repair crews by a large culvert on the impacted area.

There is no current timeline on the reopening of the section of the highway between Gin Gin and Calliope.

Some vehicles are having trouble navigating the rail overpass in Monto on the diversion route, and PBS A-double operators currently using the detour off the Bruce Highway have been requested to load a maximum GCM of 79 tonnes.

Alternative routes to avoid the overpass include:

  • In Monto township – use Flinders Street at Kennedy Street, Mill Road, Lister Street and Burnett Highway
  • Monto to Biloela via Burnett Highway
  • Biloela to Calliope via Dawson Highway

One lane of the highway at Bororen is set to re-open today (Tuesday, September 3).
