The Australian Capital Territory will resume the role of processing heavy vehicle permit applications from March 20
The Australian Capital Territory has joined other jurisdictions in taking back responsibility for processing heavy vehicle access permits.
The Territory will begin processing permits from March 20 for heavy haulage and special purpose vehicle operations within its borders.
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) was given the task of processing permits when it began full operations in February, but Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia quickly took back control of permits after the regulator struggled to do the job.
“In line with similar arrangements with other states, Roads ACT has agreed to process all new applications for oversize, overmass (OSOM), agricultural and special purpose vehicles (SPV) taking trips wholly within territory borders,” the NHVR says in a statement.
“The NHVR will continue to be the first point of contact for all other applications including any cross‐border applications.”
The regulator says it is working with the ACT to process permits as quickly as possible.
The new permit arrangements are meant to be temporary, but no date has been set for when the NHVR will take back control of the process.
Federal Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss recently announced it would be months until the regulator would be given control of permits again.
“The NHVR, together with state, territory and local governments, will monitor these temporary arrangements and consult with industry before returning to standard operations,” the NHVR says.
