NHVR roadshow to inform industry of national regulations

NHVR to hold forums in capital cities and regional locations to explain what national regulations mean for operators and drivers

November 22, 2013

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) will begin travelling across the countryside next week to explain national regulations to the industry ahead of the introduction of the new regime.

NHVR staff will host forums in capital cities and regional locations in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia – the jurisdictions that have signed up to implement the new regulatory framework on February 10 next year.

Western Australia is retaining its own system, while no start date has been set for the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory.

“Industry has kept the faith and, with the date set for the new rule book, now is the time to meet with operators and drivers across the country to explain in detail what this means for them and how to do business with us,” NHVR CEO Richard Hancock says.

He says forum attendees will hear about changes to heavy vehicle access conditions, fatigue management and vehicle inspection standards.

The NHVR team will also discuss on-road compliance and enforcement and other day-to-day matters relevant to trucking operators and drivers.

“We will also be unveiling details of our access management system and journey planner – two key components of the one-stop-shop for access permit applications,” Hancock says.

The Brisbane-based NHVR is running, albeit with limited functions. It is currently restricted to looking after the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme and Performance Based Standards.

Once fully implemented, the NHVR will be the sole access point for heavy vehicle access applications and permits and will also look after fatigue management and chain of responsibility.

Details on locations and dates of the forums and how to attend can be found here.
