NHVR data shared with Main Roads WA

Main Roads WA will now utilise the NHVR’s RCMS app, which will enable it to target high risk, repeat compliance offenders

Main Roads Western Australia’s 25 transport inspectors are now using the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) regulatory compliance mobility solutions (RCMS) app, which is enabling them to carry real-time heavy vehicle analytics on site.

The RCMS app will allow Main Roads WA to access a central database with driver and vehicle information to target high risk offenders and limit the time spent on each heavy vehicle intercept.

The app was implemented in Victoria in 2020, the ACT, South Australia and Tasmania in 2021, NSW in 2022 and Queensland earlier this year.

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto says having a central system that can be accessed across most of Australia will ensure the highest possible level of efficiency when intercepting heavy vehicles.

“The NHVR and Main Roads WA are addressing key safety risks quickly and accurately to deliver an efficient and borderless regulatory approach,” Petrocitto says.

“Camera sightings from over 115 fixed cameras across Australia alerts RCMS users if an approaching heavy vehicle is unregistered, has current defect notices, compliance breaches or recently failed to enter an inspection station.”

WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti says access to the technology and data provided through the RCMS app will enable Main Roads WA to target repeat offenders more effectively.

“We know the majority of the heavy vehicle industry are safe and compliant and it’s only a small cohort of high-risk operators and drivers that put themselves and the community at risk,” Saffioti says.

“By leveraging heavy vehicle compliance and enforcement data, Main Roads WA can target recidivist offenders to keep road users safe and prevent damage to the state’s infrastructure.”

“We can now collaborate with the NHVR in real time and be alerted to unsafe, high-risk operators travelling between WA and the eastern states, and vice-versa,” Main Roads WA Chief Operating Officer COO Des Snook adds.

“This targeted enforcement approach rewards safe operators with quick roadside intercepts, as our transport inspectors prioritise unsafe drivers, operators and vehicles.”
