A grand total of 11,256 heavy duty trucks have been sold so far this year in Australia, with Volvo and Kenworth accounting for about 40 per cent of the market
Isuzu, Hino, Fuso, Volvo, Kenworth, Iveco, Mercedes-Benz, Scania, UD Trucks and Mack.
When it comes to the Top 10 biggest selling truck brands across all categories combined, as recorded by the Truck Industry Council each month, those brands, in that order, top the charts.
In terms of market dominance, Isuzu’s 9,291 sales for the year to date are more than double Hino’s 3,924 and Fuso’s 3,359 and nearly four times higher than Volvo’s 2,302.
For the month of August, Isuzu recorded 1,183 sales, Hino clocked up 433, Fuso 347, Volvo 308 and Kenworth, 284.
Overall, across all categories, there have been 31,498 truck sales recorded from January 1 to August 31, 2023.
Month on month, the market has rebounded from July with overall sales results of 3,922 vehicles sold in August, when compared to the 3,181 sales reported for July 2023.
Heavy Duty category
The clash of the titans at the top of the heavy duty truck category in Australia fell Volvo’s way in August with the big Swede reporting 302 sales to Kenworth’s 284. If you were to put an average price of $300,000 per truck into the calculator – that’s more than $175 million worth of machinery right there.
Rounding out the Top 10 in this category for July were Isuzu with 168 sales, Scania on 116, Mack with 92, Mercedes-Benz, 90, UD Trucks and DAF on 78 a piece, Hino on 49 and Iveco at tenth with 38 trucks sold.
Year to date, 11,256 trucks have been sold in the heavy duty category.
Medium Duty category
August marks the month where the medium duty category topped 5,000 sales for the year, with the 693 sales recorded for the month bringing the year to date total to 5,227.
Isuzu topped the chart for August with 368 sales, a rise of 37 for the brand from its July result of 331.
Hino sold 187 medium duty trucks, followed by Fuso with 95, UD Trucks with 12, and Iveco, Hyundai and Volvo with six each.
The final three in the Top 10 for August went to SEA Electric, 5, Mercedes-Benz, 4 and MAN with 2.
Light Duty category
11,114. That’s the total number of light trucks sold in Australia to August 31 this year.
5,111, is how many of those trucks have been sold by the most dominant player in the light duty market, Isuzu.
As at August 31, Isuzu has sold 46 per cent of the trucks in this category this year, followed in the Top 5 by Hino on 18.4 per cent (2049), Fuso on 17.8 per cent (1978), Iveco on 6.7 per cent or 743 trucks sold and Fiat on 4.4 per cent (492 sales).
