Fines and demerit points to increase this month for Victorian drivers caught using mobile phones
November 1, 2013
Tougher laws for Victorian drivers using mobile phones will soon come into place.
Those caught using a phone while driving will be slapped with a $433 fine – up from $289, on November 25.
They will also lose four demerit points, up from three points.
Transport Minister Terry Mulder says the increased penalties are one of the key initiatives in Victoria’s Road Safety Strategy and Victoria’s Safety Action Plan.
“We want to see using mobiles while driving become as unacceptable as drink driving is,” Mulder says.
“We have all sat at the lights and seen people with their heads down, playing with their phones. We have to decide as a community that this is not on, and make it as stupid as drink driving is.”
