New heavy vehicle driver certification course released

The new driver certification course has been unveiled by CILTA over the weekend at the annual NRFA conference in Wollongong

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Australia (CILTA) has announced the release of a new post licensing driver certification course for the local transport industry.

The program was developed over two years and originated from a Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI) grant handed down by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) before being presented at the National Road Freighters Association conference in Wollongong over the weekend.

The specialist micro-credential certifies an experienced heavy vehicle driver to undertake block assessments on newly licenced drivers, or drivers who have recently upgraded to a higher licence level.

The assessment consists of 45 activity elements under the supervision of a certified heavy vehicle supervisor. The post licencing assessment has been piloted on a range of drivers in medium rigid trucks to quad road trains. Some common weaknesses have become apparent from the six month pilot trials.

The pilot trials were undertaken by driver supervisors that had undertaken the initial version of the Driver Supervisor Certification program, with the program undergoing adjustments and inclusions following the trials.

CILTA says some of the initial eight driver supervisors have now been certified, with most coming from blue chip companies.

The program is forecasting benefits in fleet crash reductions in costs and incidents, which have been previously reported.
