New funding round reinvests in road safety and crash response

Applications are now open for the Motor Accidents Insurance Board’s Injury Prevention Management Foundation, with new funding set to support road safety projects and upgraded crash rescue capability across Tasmania.

A new funding round has opened for the Motor Accidents Insurance Board’s Injury Prevention Management Foundation, continuing Tasmania’s reinvestment in road safety and emergency response capability.

In 2025–26, the Foundation invested more than $1.2 million into 15 organisations and projects aimed at reducing road trauma and improving outcomes when crashes occur.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Kerry Vincent said the funding supports a shared approach to road safety, recognising that prevention and response both play critical roles.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” Vincent said.

“While we all work to prevent crashes, accidents can still occur, and having the right road rescue equipment in place means help can get to people quickly and safely when it matters most.”

As part of the most recent funding round, $120,000 has been allocated to the St Marys SES Unit and the St Helens SES Unit for the purchase of two new 7.5-tonne heavy road crash rescue vehicles.

The vehicles are scheduled for delivery within the next 12 months and will significantly enhance the capability of both SES units, providing modern rescue tools, improving working conditions for volunteers and enabling faster, safer access to people impacted by road crashes.

“They will significantly upgrade the capabilities of the local units, providing new road crash rescue tools, improving working conditions and most importantly, ensuring faster and safer access to people impacted by road crashes,” Vincent said.

Applications are now open for the 2026–27 funding round, with community groups and organisations encouraged to consider how targeted investment could further improve road safety outcomes across the state.

Information on how to apply is available on the Motor Accidents Insurance Board website, with applications closing on Monday, March 2, 2026.
