The New England Highway in the NSW Hunter Region has been closed after a collision today between a truck and car.

A statement from NSW Police says the incident happened about 12:15pm at Maitland opposite a railway station.

Two people were injured and have been taken to hospital. The road will be closed in both directions while police investigate the accident and remove the wreckage.

“Motorists are asked to avoid the area and delay travel or take alternate routes where possible,” the statement says.

“A number of local traffic diversions are in place.”
