The Northern Territory has landed a major win with the launch of AirAsia’s new direct flight between Kuala Lumpur and Darwin, paving the way for stronger trade, freight, and tourism ties with Southeast Asia.
The route, which officially commenced today, marks a significant boost for the Territory’s ambitions to become a key player in regional trade.
Trade, business and Asian relations minister Robyn Cahill, who returned to Darwin on the inaugural flight following business and investment talks in Malaysia, says the new service would support more than just tourism.
“This new direct route connects the Territory to one of Southeast Asia’s major hubs,” Minister Cahill said.
“It means more tourists, more trade opportunities, and more international exposure for local business. It’s a practical step toward rebuilding the economy and strengthening people-to-people ties.”
AirAsia will operate four return flights weekly between Darwin and Kuala Lumpur, providing a crucial link into a broader network of over 130 destinations.
The new service is supported by the Territory Aviation Attraction Scheme and delivered in partnership with the Airport Development Group.
Airport Development Group executive general manager Rob Porter says this is the result of a true partnership between airline, government and airport.
“It’s a win for the Territory – bringing affordable travel, supporting local jobs and injecting fresh energy into our visitor economy,” Porter says.
AirAsia Malaysia CEO Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra marks a new chapter for regional tourism.
“We’re thrilled to provide this connectivity between NT and Kuala Lumpur. This route offers the only direct, affordable link between Darwin and Kuala Lumpur, and serves as a gateway to our broader network across Asia,” he says.
As part of the launch, AirAsia and the NT Government are hosting a familiarisation trip to showcase the Top End’s economic and investment opportunities to key Malaysian and Indonesian influencers and media.
Promotional one-way fares are now on sale via airasia.com starting from $219 AUD.
