A new BP-operated rest area and decoupling bay will be built near one of Australia’s busiest freight routes to support long-haul truck drivers.
The 24-hour service centre, which will be able to cater for up to 45 trucks, will be constructed at the Logic logistics hub 14km south of Wodonga near the Hume Highway in Victoria.
The works will start early next year and be finished middle of the year.
Victorian Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan says the site will address the critical shortage of rest areas along the highway that has been a problem for many years.
“The trailer interchange site will support greater flexibility for drivers, allowing Melbourne-based drivers to exchange trailers with Sydney-based counterparts, which will effectively reduce time away from their home base,” Ryan says.
Private developers will be responsible for building the site, but the Victorian Government has committed $1.64 million to the project from its Regional Growth Fund.
The project is jointly managed by the service centre developer AI Group and City of Wodonga.
Transport operators such as Border Express and Cope Sensitive Freight operate at the Logic precinct, while Woolworths is building a $100 million distribution centre.
