Navistar takes on Campbell as new boss

Ustian pays price for engine emission system failure, Clarke promoted to COO

August 28, 2012

Navistar has chosen former Textron head Lewis Campbell as its new Chairman and interim CEO.

Campbell replaces Daniel Ustian, who has retired from the position and the board, the company says.

United States truck and engine maker Navistar has also promoted Troy Clarke, currently President of Truck and Engine operations, to President and Chief Operating Officer.

Campbell has broad experience in vehicle and machinery manufacturing, according to Navistar’s independent Lead Director Michael Hammes.

“Lewis Campbell is a high-calibre executive who brings to Navistar deep and broad strategic, technical and operational skills and a proven track record of leadership with global industrial companies – including 24 years of experience in product design, engineering and manufacturing in General Motors’s automotive, trucking and component businesses and 17 years in senior leadership positions at Textron including more than 10 years as Chairman, President and CEO,” Hammes says.

Textron owns aviation brands Bell Helicopter and Cessna, light personal vehicle firm E-Z-GO and automotive systems company Kautex.

US media reports that Ustian’s abrupt departure relates to the company’s non-urea emissions system strategy, abandoned due to the technology being unable to gain regulatory approval.

As a result, the company reversed course and linked with Cummins.
