NatRoad says tugboat lockout narrowly averted

NatRoad says the Fair Work Commission intervened to end an industrial dispute in the nick of time

The National Road Transport Association (NatRoad) says a tugboat lockout has been narrowly avoided.

NatRoad says an industrial dispute involving tugboat company Svitzer Australia remains fluid with the Fair Work Commission recently ordering it to scrap its planned lockout of workers.

The Danish-owned company had announced a lockout of 582 tugboat workers.

NatRoad says the lockout was in response to a number of strikes over the past month in a three-year-old bargaining dispute.

The Commission ruled it was satisfied the lockout of maritime workers at 17 ports would cause significant damage to the Australian economy.

The decision resulted in the end of what could’ve been a lockout that would influence Australia’s port and logistics industry.
