NatRoad approves government road infrastructure budget

NatRoad has weighed in on the recently announced national infrastructure projects in the upcoming federal budget

The National Road Transport Association (NatRoad) says there’s much to like about what’s in store for road infrastructure in the lead up to this month’s federal budget.

NatRoad CEO Warren Clark says infrastructure, transport, regional development and local government minister Catherine King flagged $9.6 billion in infrastructure spending at the weekend, with much of it focussed on roads.

“The freight task is increasing rapidly, so we welcome this significant commitment,” Clark says.

“Some $540 million to upgrade Tasmania’s road corridors and $586.4m for a major upgrade of the Bruce Highway through Brisbane’s outer northern suburbs are important projects.

“A $300 million Western Sydney Roads Package to support planning or preparatory works for the Castlereagh Connection and Richmond Road improvements are also welcome.”

Clark says the big spend in Victoria is $2.2 billion for the Suburban Rail Loop in Melbourne.

“While motorists will benefit most from the projects in South Australia, we are pleased to see the Commonwealth committing to a share of a new $1.5 billion Freight Highway Upgrade Program,” Clark says.

“This will upgrade sections of the interstate Tanami Road and nationally significant freight routes, including the Dukes, Stuart and Augusta highways.”
