National Road Transport Museum welcomes historic donation

The National Road Transport Museum will have a new centrepiece for its Australian Festival of Transport, with a newly acquired IVECO Euro 5 ACCO

As IVECO welcomes in a new generation of its ACCO models, the company has found a home for the final Euro 5 truck at the National Road Transport Museum in Alice Springs.

The last of its kind manufactured locally, it will sit proudly as a reminder of the evolution of IVECO’s trucks and the role they play in the Australian road transport industry. The new addition is now a key attraction in the Australian Festival of Transport, kicking off at the Museum from August 24 to 27.

Road Transport Historical Society Inc. CEO Nick Prus welcomes a piece of road transport history into the Museum’s halls.

“We’re very happy and grateful that IVECO considered us for this donation,” Prus says.

“As an exhibit, the last locally manufactured Euro 5 ACCO aligns very well with the goals of the museum; to preserve the heritage of the local road transport industry. The ACCO will be on permanent display in the ‘Trucks in Action’ venue, which showcases the diversity of vehicles that were built in Australia.”

The donation marks a changing of the guard of sorts, as an all-new ACCO is set to become available in Australia in the coming months.

IVECO ANZ managing director Michael May reflects on the history of the model and its significance to his company’s history.

“In the late 1960s through to the early 2000s, the ACCO played a massive role in Australia and New Zealand, being the truck of choice for a great many applications including general freight, linehaul, emergency service work and vocational duties including waste collection and agitator work,” May says.

“At the end of 2019, IVECO celebrated the delivery of the 90,000th ACCO, a testament to the overall success of the model, so the truck’s inclusion within the National Road Transport Museum is deserved and well earned.

“And while it may mark the end of an era, we very much look forward to what the future holds with the imminent release of all-new ACCO.”

The newest ACCO model takes from the history of the previous trucks while looking ahead to the future. New additions include the latest active and passive safety features, fuel efficient engines that meet Euro 6 (Step E) emission standards and more comfortable cabins.
