MTAG protest scheduled for next month

Community group will stage a rally on March 19 to get trucks removed from local roads in Melbourne's west

February 27, 2013

The Maribyrnong Truck Action Group (MTAG) plans to hold a protest next month after storms saw its last proposed event cancelled in November last year.

The 30-minute long event will be held on Shepherd’s Bridge at the corner of Footscray Road and the Maribyrnong River in Melbourne’s west on March 19.
MTAG says the protest aims to lobby the Victorian Government on infrastructure projects to remove trucks from local roads.

It says it will be a family-friendly held in consultation with the Victoria Police.

The planned protest comes after the Victorian Government last week voted against a motion from the Greens for an inquiry into the impact and cost of truck traffic on residents.

Large numbers of trucks use local roads in Melbourne’s west to access the Port of Melbourne. Residents have long complained about the health and safety impacts of the rigs, referring to loud noises and pollution.
