More works set to start on Melbourne’s Wurundjeri Way

Further works on Melbourne thoroughfare Wurundjeri Way are set to commence on July 2, as the West Gate Tunnel Project continues

The next stage of the Wurundjeri Way extension is set to begin on July 2, as works to continue to West Gate Tunnel project continue to progress.

The northbound carriageway will be reduced to one lane at the Flinders Street intersection during the works and is set to be in place until mid-September.

Delays of up to 10 minutes are expected during peak hours.

The West Gate Tunnel, once completed, is expected to take 9000 trucks a day off local roads and provide a second, vital river crossing alternative to the West Gate Bridge.

Wurundjeri Way is also currently being extended between Dudley Road and Dynon Street, with the impending Wurundjeri Way city bypass expected to remove 5000 vehicles off Spencer and King streets every day.

1.6km of new bridges and ramps have already been built in the active project. Asphalting is also already well advanced on the new section.

Member for Footscray Katie Hall praised commuters for their patience amid the key projects.

“We thank motorists for their patience as we get on with these essential works on this new city bypass, which will take traffic off key local roads,” Hall says.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Danny Pearson says the works, once completed, will change the face of transport in and around Melbourne’s CBD.

“The Wurundjeri Way extension is a key part of the West Gate Tunnel Project that will deliver the first new city bypass in 25 years,” Pearson says.

“Once complete, the new Wurundjeri Way will transform travel between the north, city and western suburbs, allowing motorists to avoid the CBD by travelling directly from Dynon Road to Flinders Street.”

The project will also add 14km of upgraded walking and cycling paths, and close to nine hectares of new parks and wetlands.
