Momentum to intermodal hub’s approval continues with Canberra to examine agreement
Moorebank’s steady progress to realisation has passed another milestone with the Sydney Intermodal Terminal Alliance (SIMTA) seeing its proposal agreed with the Moorebank Intermodal Company (MIC) now facing Federal Government due diligence.
The proposal suggests a joint precinct, encompassing the Commonwealth’s former School of Military Engineering site and the adjoining land owned by the SIMTA consortium of Qube and Aurizon, the Federal Government says.
“The Government will now undertake a due diligence examination of the proposal,” infrastructure minister Warren Truss and assistant treasurer Mathias Cormann state.
“The Boards of Qube Holdings and Aurizon Holdings will also consider the proposal.
“Our examination will determine if the proposal delivers value for money for taxpayers and achieves the Government’s objectives for the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal development.”
Qube managing director Maurice James welcomed the agreement with the MIC saying it allows for development of the precinct to begin next year subject to planning approvals.
The Australian Logistics Council (ALC) believes the development is to be welcomed.
“Today’s announcement is an important milestone in the process to develop a much-needed intermodal facility in Sydney’s south west, augmenting existing capacity at Enfield and Chullora. ALC therefore hopes the Australian Government can come to an early decision to endorse this important national infrastructure project,” managing director Michael Kilgariff says.
