The Motor Trades Association (MTA) Queensland has expanded its Women in Trades Apprenticeship Mentoring Program and a bid to help recruit and retain women in the state’s automotive sector.
The program initially launched in 2024 in partnership with BUSY Sisters and the Queensland government and supported first- and second-year apprentices through tailored one-on-one mentorship and guidance.
Only eight per cent of automotive apprentices in Queensland are female. The program has expanded to create a more supportive environment for all female apprentices, including those still in school.
MTA Queensland CEO Rod Camm says the expansion of the program is only the start of the work that must be done to make the automotive field a more appealing prospect for women.
“While we’ve seen growth in the number of females entering the industry, much more needs to be done to create an inclusive and supportive environment for women in a field that has long been male dominated,” Camm says.
“This program provides essential support to overcome gender-based challenges and help steer the industry to a more diverse and equitable future.”
Additionally, the program provides assistance to business owners and employers to foster a more inclusive, diverse and equitable environment for all in the industry.
With MTA Queensland now encouraging all female apprentices to take advantage of the program’s expansion, Project Manager Michelle King says support for the initiative continues to grow across the state.
“We’ve seen so many amazing apprentices thrive with the support of this program.” King says.
“By expanding it to include all female apprentices, we’re ensuring even more women will have access to the resources, guidance and mentorship they need to build careers in the automotive industry.
“The success we’ve seen so far is just the beginning, and we’re incredibly excited to continue offering this vital support to more women in trades.”
