Melbourne level crossing cure makes progress

Springvale Road bottleneck takes another step to being overcome, with moves on others in pipeline

September 9, 2013

One of Melbourne’s most intractable freight and traffic bottlenecks, the Springvale Road level crossing, has taken another step to being overcome, Victorian Premier Denis Napthine says.

Springvale Road is a key route in Melbourne’s east and south-east and borders significant commercial, industrial and logistics precincts.

However, VicRoads has announced recently that it will be closed from Friday September 20 to Sunday, September 29, to facilitate work, following a similar closure that ended on Saturday.

“More than 8,000 vehicles and 80 trains travel through the rail crossing on Springvale Road during peak periods every day,” Napthine says.

Both major parties recognise level crossings are as significant congestion triggers and a number are earmarked for attention including at Mitcham Road and Rooks Road in Mitcham, with planning and preconstruction activities are also underway at North Road, Ormond; Blackburn Road, Blackburn; Main Road, St Albans; Mountain Highway and Scoresby Road, Bayswater; Burke Road, Glen Iris and Murrumbeena Road, Murrumbeena.

Two level crossings on Anderson Road in Sunshine will also be removed as part of the Regional Rail Link project.

“This approach is aimed at relieving localised congestion across Melbourne, while work is undertaken on longer term congestion solutions such as the East West Link and the M80 Ring Road upgrade,” Napthine says.
