Medvet device accredited to conduct oral drug tests

Company says accreditation of oral fluid testing device will make drug testing in the workplace easier

November 26, 2012

A supplier of drug and alcohol screening programs has been certified to market an oral fluid testing device in a move it believes will make it easier for workplaces to conduct drug tests.

Medvet’s oral fluid testing device recently gained independent certification, and Operations Manager Steve Korkoneas sees the device becoming an effective alternative to urine testing.

He says it can detect opiates, amphetamines, methamphetamines, marijuana, cocaine, benzodiazepines from oral fluid within 10 minutes.

“Previously, urine testing was the only certified method of drug testing available for workplaces,” Korkoneas says.

“While urine testing has its advantages and is the most appropriate testing method in some circumstances, the fact that an oral fluid drug testing product has an independent certificate of compliance is a game-changer for the transport industry.

“It is less intrusive for employees, and eliminates the need for special testing facilities or gender-specific staffing to supervise the process, which can be required for urine testing.”

He says oral fluid testing has less privacy issues, is observable by the collection agency and the results are more difficult to contaminate compared to urine tests.

Korkoneas says workplace drug testing should be considered an essential element in all safety sensitive industries.

“Testing has many benefits, including creating a safe working environment, minimising risk, accident-related cost savings and increased workplace morale,” he says.
