The Transport Industry Council has released its May heavy vehicle sale numbers
Recently released Australian truck sales from May suggests the nation may be on its way to breaking its all-time heavy vehicle sales records for a year.
With just the month of June left for the first half of 2022, truck sales in May reached 3,777 units to be up on the same month in 2021 according to the Truck Industry Council’s statistics.
The results fell just short of the all-time record for May heavy vehicles, which was set in 2018 when 3,931 heavy vehicles were sold.
The heavy-duty truck segment continued to lead the way in sales growth this year, with 1,274 heavy duty vehicles sold last month.
The medium duty segment also outsold its corresponding month in 2021 with 681 trucks delivered in May, while light duty trucks were up by 163 sales from May 2021 to register 1,329 units delivered last month.
But van sales as a whole were down for May, with light duty van delivers struggling according to the TIC numbers.

The TIC says supply chain issues in Europe is negatively impacting light duty van sales, with numbers down by 33.9 per cent over May 2021 numbers with just 493 vans being delivered.
TIC CEO Tony McMullan says May was another good month for truck sales.
“May was a strong month for heavy truck sales with all segments posting gains over May 2021,” McMullan says.
“Weak van sales are tempering the overall heavy vehicle sales numbers in 2022, however the market still looks primed to set a new first half year sales record.
“These strong sales are a good indicator that business confidence is strong in the road freight sector as it is across most economy segments.”
