Major SA freight route congestion to be busted

The tender has been awarded for a host of upgrades to a busy multi-transport intersection in Adelaide’s west

South Australian company Bardavcol has been awarded the contract to undertake major works on the upgrade of the Marion Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive intersection.

The $85 million project will help slash road congestion and build traffic capacity on the busy road corridors, which is a major freight, commuter and public transport route.

Roughly 60,000 vehicles pass through the intersection every day. The jointly-funded project has been allocated $42.5 million from both the federal and South Australian state governments.

Upgrades to the intersection will include:

  • New turning lanes on Sir Donald Bradman Drive in both directions.
  • An extended left turn lane on Marion Road (northbound) heading west onto Sir Donald Bradman Drive.
  • New bicycle lanes installed on all approaches.
  • Pedestrian crossing upgrades to improve cycling in pedestrian safety.
  • LED road lighting, asphalt, kerbing and gutters.
  • The installation of public spaces around the intersection.

The announcement comes after the confirmation of the consortium of John Holland, Bouygues Construction, Arcadis Australia, Jacobs and Venita as the preferred Alliance partner to deliver South Australia’s biggest infrastructure project, the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project.

The Marion Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive upgrades are part of wider improvements that hope to ensure South Australia’s road network can function efficiently during and after construction of the T2D.
