M1 improvements works complete

The state government says completed works that form part of its safer roads program will allow thousands of motorists to enjoy a safer journey on the motorway.

The New South Wales (NSW) government says thousands of motorists who use the M1 Pacific Motorway each day are enjoying safer journeys with the completion of more than $2.6 million in improvement work between Kariong and Calga.

Transport for NSW North Region Director, Anna Zycki, says the NSW Government invested more than $1.2 million over two years through the Safer Roads Program to reduce the risk of crashes on this 2.5 kilometre stretch of the motorway.

“More than 70,000 motorists use the M1 each day as a vital link between Sydney, the Central Coast and beyond,” says Zycki.

“Crews installed vehicle-activated signs in both directions to provide advanced warnings of queuing on approach to the Mooney Mooney Creek Bridge, helping prevent end-to-end collisions when traffic is backed up.

“Work also involved renewing line marking and improving drainage in the median and on the road shoulders near Mooney Mooney Creek Bridge to reduce the risk of crashes during wet weather.”

Zycki says that in addition to the improvements from the Safer Roads Program, the NSW Government also allocated $500,000 to further extend the drainage improvements and $900,000 to replace 490 metres of roadside concrete barrier.

“This provides stronger protection for vehicles running off the road along this section of highway,” says Zycki.

“These additional safety improvements will help ensure these road users return to their loved ones each day and have helped support 15 jobs on the Central Coast during the project.”

Transport for NSW says it would like to thank motorists for their patience while this work was carried out.
