Lufthansa Cargo launches Munich freighter operations

An A321 freighter will travel from Lufthansa’s Munich hub to Istanbul twice a week, in a move that has strengthened the freight company’s position in southern Germany

Lufthansa’s Munich hub is expanding and will be operating freighters from the facility for the first time from July 6 this year.

An A321 freighter will connect Munich and Istanbul twice a week and is currently planned for every Saturday and Sunday.

Lufthansa’s Munich hub covers an area of 38,000 square metres, and contains a state-of-the-art CEIV certified Pharma Hub MUC, which enables temperature sensitive pharmaceuticals to be stored and handled safely and effectively.

“We are looking forward to offering our customers this new freighter connection, which makes our global network even more attractive,” Lufthansa Cargo CEO Ashwin Bhat says.

“Munich Airport offers ideal conditions for the fast and reliable transportation of air freight, which ultimately also enables global business from another important European airport.

“We are laying the foundation for aligning our network even more closely with the needs of our customers in the future.”

Lufthansa is one of the world’s leading airfreight companies, and travelled 7.5 billion freight ton kilometres in 2023 alone.

Its network currently covers around 300 destinations in 100 countries, much of which is handled via Frankfurt Airport in Germany’s west.

Customers can book their shipments on the new route with immediate effect.
