KiwiRail announce new CEO

A familiar face will return to KiwiRail this year

KiwiRail has released the name of its new CEO to take over as the head of the rail company.

Former KiwiRail chief executive Peter Reidy will return to the role to take the company forward after nearly four years as the CEO of Fletcher Construction.

“The KiwiRail board was impressed by the number and calibre of applicants for the CEO vacancy,” KiwiRail chairman David McLean says.

“Peter stands out for his strong, demonstrated leadership ability, including at KiwiRail itself where he was a highly respected CEO from 2014 until he left in 2018.

“I’m delighted he will be returning to KiwiRail where his experience will be invaluable in leading our transition to financial sustainability.”

Already busy delivering a program of $8 billion to the New Zealand government, Reidy jumps into the role as the group looks to continue expanding.

“We require a leader who can hit the ground running for the benefit of our customers, our people and the public, and the board is confident that Reidy is that leader,” McLean says.

Reidy says he’s excited to be returning to KiwiRail and focusing on its future.

“Much has changed since I was last at the company, especially with the level of government investment which enables the purchase of two new Interislander ferries,” Reidy says.

“I’m not that what has not changed is the commitment of a dedicated KiwiRail team who want to deliver on the potential that rail has to help New Zealand achieve targets and shift more freight and people onto rail.”

Reidy’s start date is yet to be advised, with David Gordon remaining as acting group chief executive with Helen Rogers his deputy in the meantime.
