Flinders Ports hails two decades and Deloitte gong

Port and logistics operator seen as among Australia’s best privately managed companies

Flinders Port Holdings (FPH) has been named one of 10 private Australian companies recognised for their outstanding business performance in Deloitte Australia’s 2021 Best Managed Companies (BMC) awards.

The Adelaide-based port and logistics services provider joins firms mostly in construction and IT in being an award winner and is the only transport and logistics company to feature in Australia so far.

It comes at a particularly sweet time for the company, which is marking its 20th year in operation this month.

“Through that time we have consolidated and expanded our operations, ensuring South Australian businesses continue to have access to industry leading ports and logistics services,” CEO Stewart Lammin said.

“Through our operations, we facilitate over $25 billion in international trade annually and now employ over 700 people in the state.

“We are proud of this record and excited about building on it further, bringing the state’s businesses closer to each other and to the world.”

Now in its second year in Australia – and run in association with Google Cloud and the Commonwealth Bank – the BMC program identifies and celebrates privately-owned and managed companies across Australia that set the highest standards of business performance, and shines a light on the power of private business as a key driver of Australia’s economy.

According to Deloitte, the program’s judges challenged and evaluated the strengths of the applicants across four key pillars: strategy; culture and commitment; capabilities and innovation; and governance and financials.

“Deloitte’s Best Managed Companies program has provided us with a chance to reflect on our many achievements and to look forward, allowing us to explore further opportunities for growth and development,” FPH CFO Keith Halifax said.

“To be recognised in this way is fantastic for our business and our people, and will ultimately lead to further improvement across our operations.”

“Our Best Managed Companies program is about celebrating the passion, focus, dynamism and growth that Australia’s best private companies are renowned for,” Deloitte Private partner and Best Managed Companies program national leader Natalie Faull said.

“They are often disruptors, they are significant employers, they are always looking for growth and success, locally and beyond our borders, and they are strong supporters in their local communities. The impact of the pandemic has not changed this focus, it has heightened it.

“This year, the program has really demonstrated just how well our best managed private businesses have refined their already well-developed strategies in response to the pandemic. They’ve certainly been tested by the Covid environment, but they’ve also stood up to the challenges, and are navigating the future with confidence.

“We’ve witnessed business operations pivoting due to Covid-19’s impact, including deliberate integration of hybrid workforce management tools and emerging future-focused digitisation of operations. We’ve also seen global trends emerge, with companies investing more in diversity and inclusion and ESG practices.

“What was also consistent across all of our winners was their actions surrounding their people and stakeholders. Communication with employees, customers and suppliers has been a very strong focus, particularly with in the context of hybrid working environments, operating in multiple states with differing health directives, and global supply chain disruptions.”
