Gebrüder Weiss boosts Asia-Pacific presence with new facilities

Venerable Austrian logistics firm sets up in Australia and New Zealand

An Austrian logistics firm with an international footprint is looking to bring the wisdom of centuries ‘down under’.

Gebrüder Weiss is to open air and sea freight locations in Australia and New Zealand as the firm continues to extend its 35-location Asia-Pacific network and bolster close ties to importing countries.

Earlier this month, it opened a new office location in Seoul and the company sees the new of Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland sites as essential addition for the company within the region.

“As we enter the markets in Australia and New Zealand, we will focus primarily on import business from Asian, American, and European markets,” regional manager East Asia/Oceania Michael Zankel says.

“To offer customers in its newest market one-stop logistics solutions, the global transport leader has a presence in each of the region’s top trading partner countries, which includes China, the US, Japan, Germany, and South Korea.

“Business commodities such as vehicles and automotive parts, machines and electronic products, and goods from the food and chemical industries, are imported from the USA, Europe, and Southeast Asia to the region Down Under.

“The important thing here is to establish compelling delivery chains in the future, based on our long-standing experience in the logistics market.

“In this context, we also make sure to tie in with fast-growing transport activities within Asia, and create synergies when it comes to the efficient use of transport capacities.”

Set to celebrate its 200th anniversary in three years’ time, Gebrüder Weiss is one of the world’s oldest freight companies.

It has more than 7,300 employees, 150 company-owned locations and an annual turnover of Euro1.7 billion (A$2.8 billion).

Along with its core of land transport, air and sea freight and logistics businesses, the firm has interests in consultancy, communications and Gebrüder Weiss parcel service GWP, a joint venture with international firm DPD.
