The development of two new regional trade distribution centres (RTDCs) in Queensland has been announced by the state government, with Toowoomba and Cairns the chosen destinations.

An existing facility at Toowoomba's Wellcamp Airport will be expanded by 3,000 square metres, while a new 3,400sqm facility will be constructed at the Cairns International Airport.

Some details have emerged, with the Toowoomba development to comprise four cold rooms, a temperature-controlled store room, a store room and an external storage area.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the RTDCs will "supercharge rapid airfreight access for agricultural producers".

"In 2017, we said we’d deliver an export hub for Queensland but following a very strong response we decided to deliver two.

"Now we’re delivering on our commitment and Toowoomba will reap the benefits."

Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport general manager Robert Kasch hails the announcement.

"As a proud Toowoomba-based company, the interests of Wellcamp Airport are closely intertwined with those of primary producers and processors across the Darling Downs and regional Queensland", Kasch says.

"We look forward to building a centre which will take the agricultural export capacity for this region to the next level, for the benefit of generations to come."

Cairns Airport CEO Norris Carter says the plans are a boon for the region and the airport.

"We welcome the state government’s contribution and recognition of the importance of Cairns as the gateway to the Asia Pacific region for freight.

"This announcement also supports our vision for sustainable aviation growth and identifies the enormous export potential that exists for producers from across the Far North."

Construction on both facilities is expected to start in the second quarter of 2020.
