Logistics solutions provider DB Schenker has become a foundation partner of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, the commercial and logistics hub to be developed near the new Western Sydney Airport.

Set for a 2026 opening, the curfew-free airport is estimated to comprise 11 percent freight aircraft.

The Aerotropolis will be the 11,000ha area east of the airport including an advanced technology and aerospace precinct, while the west is being mooted as a freight, logistics and agribusiness precinct.

The Western City and Aerotropolis Authority (WCAA), a joint state and federal initiative, will facilitate the design and delivery of the Aerotropolis.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with DB Schenker board member for freight transport and logistics Alexander Doll for future cooperation around fields such as planning a digitally-enabled freight and logistics supply system, a modern cold-storage logistics hub, or logistics for the aerospace and defence sectors.

"The WCAA will work with DB Schenker to explore the best freight and logistics technologies for adoption in and around the Aerotropolis," Berejiklian says.

DB Schenker says it intends to work cooperatively with the WCAA to promote the development of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis.

"The Aerotropolis is set to become a pioneering project on our path to building smart cities with integrated transportation concepts and sustainable logistics solutions," Doll says.

"It is our pleasure to support the development, which will further strengthen DB Schenker’s engagement in the Asia-Pacific region, that has been so successful over the past decades."

DB Schenker Asia Pacific CEO Ditlev Blicher adds: "For more than 57 years, DB Schenker has been supporting trade and helping businesses grow with our cutting-edge logistics network in Australia and around the world.

"We are delighted to join in this unique effort of building the Western Sydney Aerotropolis for the benefit of the enterprises and the residents of New South Wales."
