Secon gives green light to Truganina super-site

Rapid growth sees Secon Freight Logistics commits to a new purpose-built facility

Secon Freight Logistics is expanding its presence in Victoria and has committed to a huge new purpose-built logistics hub in Truganina with Berton Investments.

The logistics hub will be partially owned by Secon and partially retained by Berton under a long-term lease with Secon.

Secon partnered with property and supply chain firm TM Insight on the facility’s design and delivery.

The new 21,000-square-metre premises is to be situated on a 90,000-square-metre site.

The partners put its end value at more than $50 million.

Secon  has bought the main office, container park, cross-docking warehouse and workshop part of the logistics hub and is to lease the adjacent logistics warehouse building from Berton.

The development will feature expansive areas of heavy-duty container pavement, head office accomodation, separate warehouses to accommodate both contract logistics and cross-docking operations and workshop areas for equipment repairs and maintenance.

Secon CEO Steve Nailer notes that “2019 is a proud year for Secon. We’re marking our 50th anniversary, a perfect occasion to celebrate the people and values that have built us into the success we are today.

“It’s also the year some big plans come together to move Secon into an exciting new era.

“We partnered with TM Insight to develop a strategy to consolidate our Victorian operations into a leading-edge site.

“This new purpose-built facility will solidify our market position and also ensure safety is at the forefront of our day to day operations.

“We have also secured approval for super-b and a-double HPFV vehicles to the site which will significantly increase transport efficiencies and our overall operational efficiencies.”

TM Insight will now also project-manage the build.

“This new commitment is a bold move by Secon to future proof their business in the current challenging environment for logistics companies,” its director of property, Nathan Bingham, says.

“Rapidly increasing congestion on our roads and the diminishing supply of quality land in strategic locations will put pressure on logistics companies’ operations.

“However, through this major commitment, Secon is firmly establishing a landmark operation in the centre of Australia’s fastest growing industrial market which will allow them to attract new business and deliver a high-quality service.

“Additionally, Truganina was selected as the preferred location for this development due to the proximity to Secon’s current and future customers and the area’s investment in road infrastructure.”

The road network of Truganina that will service Secon is currently undergoing a $1.8 billion upgrade by the Victorian government.”

This new facility is expected to be operational in late this year.
