New AusPost parcel centre for Ipswich

Australia Post to develop 13.5ha facility to cater to online shopping demand

Work has started on what will be the largest parcel facility and delivery centre in the Southern Hemisphere – to be built outside Ipswich for Australia Post.

Australia Post chief operating officer Bob Black says the new facility will cater to online shopping customers, who he says have been driving parcel volumes higher.

“Our $200 million investment, which includes automated processing technology and improved parcel scanning and tracking, … will ensure we’re well-equipped to manage future volume growth,” Black says.

Property developer Goodman Group says Australia Post will invest more than $200 million in the 13.5 hectare site at its Redbank Motorway Estate, alongside logistics players TNT-Fedex, DB Schenker and Northline.

The news comes after a bumper financial year for Australia Post, which recorded a 41 per cent rise in net profits during 2017-18 on the back of higher parcel revenues. Read our report on the result, here

Black adds that the company had selected the site because of its location between Brisbane and Ipswich, as well as its proximity to three major motorway interchanges.

The first stage of construction, covering about 24,000 square metres, will be completed by the end of 2018, to help the company install sortation equipment from January that year, before the project is officially completed in October.

More than 500 people are expected to be based at the Ipswich facility when it opens.

“The site will be operational prior to peak period 2019, and will be capable of processing up to 700,000 parcels per day, and will be our key delivery hub and parcel processing centre in Queensland,” Black says.

Goodman Australia general manager Jason Little says it has seen growing demand for industrial properties driven by the spike in online shopping.

“We’ve extended our existing landbank at Redbank by another 87 hectares to ensure future supply for this growing demand,” he says.
