Vegetation cleared and safety barriers installed following spate of accidents in NSW
Work to clear vegetation, install safety barriers and improve signage along the Hume Highway outside Berrima, New South Wales, has started this week.
To be funded by the NSW government, the $114,000 package of work will be carried out in response to a series of vehicle accidents in the area, NSW Road and Maritime Services said in an announcement.
“In the five years to July 2015 there were eight recorded crashes at this location, three of which resulted in injuries, with five people hurt,” a spokesperson for the department said.
“This work aims to reduce the incidence and severity of crashes after two people were killed in an incident at this location in July 2017.”
RMS said workers from the department would spend up to three days installing safety barriers this week, with the speed limit to be reduced in the area.
Delays of up to five minutes should be expected along the road, RMS said.
“Crews will then return next month to install a concrete median, signage and adjust line marking and the community will continue to be updated,” the department said.
An additional $100,000 has been allocated next financial year to install lighting at the intersection.
