Toll’s recent reset has failed to blunt its international ambitions with the Japan Post-owned Australian giant tapping experienced container shipping and logistics executive Thomas Knudsen to lead its global forwarding division from January.

As global forwarding president based in Singapore, Knudsen will oversee international air and ocean freight forwarding and supply chain management services, ranging from complex supply chain services through to port-to-port freight forwarding, Toll says.

In taking the role, he steps away from the post of CEO of Damco Asia, a subsidiary of Danish-headquartered shipping behemoth Maersk.

He has previously held leadership, commercial, trade and route management roles in the Middle East, North America, Europe and Asia.

He also had a year’s experience in 2006 heading the then Maersk Logistics in France overseeing France, Tunisia and Algeria.

Before Damco, Knudsen held positions as Regional CEO, Maersk Line Asia Pacific region, and before that MD for Maersk Line in East China.

In his new role, he will lead a team of more than 3,100 Toll team members across 50 countries, as well as a network of agents across more than 150 countries.

Toll Group MD Michael Byrne says Knudsen’s appointment comes at a critical time for the business.

"After an extensive global search for the right candidate, we are delighted to welcome Mr Knudsen to the Toll team," Byrne says.

"Mr Knudsen brings a proven track record in delivering results in a highly competitive industry.

"The strategy for our transformation of our Global Forwarding business is clearly defined and we are starting to see good results.

"Mr Knudsen will accelerate the good progress that Toll is making to restore its global forwarding business back into sustainable growth."
