DHL Global Forwarding expands PNG exports

Certification allows logistics company to provide full range of air services

DHL’s capabilities in Papua New Guinea have expanded with the company’s Global Forwarding arm adding an air freight export service on the back of an International Air Transport Association (IATA) Cargo Agent certification.

According to DHL, it can now offer Papua New Guinea customers a full range of air services alongside ocean freight offerings out of Port Moresby.

"We have a great portfolio of customers in Papua New Guinea whom we have been working with for a number of years," DHL Global Forwarding Papua New Guinea country manager David Cels says.

"This expansion will offer them quicker access to international ports, particularly in the Philippines, Japan and Singapore which are connected with direct flights from Port Moresby.

"We have an experienced team at DHL Global Forwarding who has a deep understanding of the logistics industry, including certifications in dangerous goods.

"This expansion of services was a logical progression in developing our business in Papua New Guinea and we look forward to assisting more businesses with their international trade."

While Cels predicts air freight imports and ocean freight will still take up much of their business in the country, he says the new service will add value for customers seeking urgent, small or high-value shipments.

"Particularly within the oil and gas industries which are important for the local economy, air freight can be invaluable in offering business-critical repair services and also for instances like testing samples," he says.

"We also see opportunities for high value food items such as vanilla beans and premium coffee."

DHL says the country is a growth region for the business, with an export market valued at over US$9 (A$11.5) billion and is growing over eight per cent annually over the past five years.
