Aurizon signs new rail haulage contract with Wilmar

The new contract is in addition to Aurizon’s existing bulk haul contract with Wilmar in north Queensland

Rail freight operator Aurizon has signed a new two-year rail haulage agreement with Wilmar Sugar Australia.

Based on the new contract, Aurizon will haul about 245,000 tonnes per annum of bulk sugar from the Proserpine Mill to Queensland Sugar at Mackay Harbour and 60,000 tonnes of molasses from the Burdekin mills to Port of Townsville.

The new contract, effective January 2016, is in addition to Aurizon’s existing 1.2 million tonnes of bulk sugar contract with Wilmar in North Queensland’s Burdekin region.

Aurizon executive Mauro Neves said the company was delighted to reach agreement on a new contract with Wilmar, which extends a relationship dating back more than 20 years.

“The contract guarantees rail capacity to Wilmar, provides the company with an efficient rail service from mill to port and meets our needs commercially as we grow our business.

“Sugar plays an important part in Aurizon’s diverse portfolio of bulk freight businesses in Queensland which range from minerals and fertiliser to agricultural commodities and livestock,” Neves said.

“Our commitment is to continue providing safe, quality, reliable and efficient services which help Wilmar deliver its product to market,” he added.
