Dimension Data in charge of Webb Dock East IT

The role of developing the new terminal’s IT infrastructure falls to Dimension Data

Dimension Data will be in charge of installing IT infrastructure in the Port of Melbourne’s Webb Dock East after being chosen by the Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT).

According to the technology company, it will be tasked with providing Wi-Fi connectivity across the 35.4 ha site to enable VICT’s automated container carriers to transport cargo from vessels, sort and stack shipping containers, and load outgoing trucks.

“VICT is a perfect example of how technology is completely redefining the way we look at business,” Dimension Data Australia CEO Rodd Cunico says.

“From the second a shipping container leaves the deck of a container vessel, the process becomes fully automated through mission critical information systems and the supporting technical infrastructure.

“None of this could be made possible without the right expertise.”

Hoping to be one of the most automated terminals in the world, VICT CEO Anders Dømmestrup says Dimension Data will aid it to handle over one million TEU per year from the Webb Dock East site.

“Ultimately, the technical infrastructure will be supporting all of VICT’s mission critical information systems and we trust Dimension Data to deliver our distinct requirements and draw on the unique expertise of its global counterparts,” he says.

Using a holistic approach, Dimention Data will connect the site to the data centre, lay fibre cabling, install a CCTV network, and enable than 60 Cisco Wireless Access Points.

An on-site data centre will be implemented, as well as a managed cloud platform.

Scheduled to begin operations in 2017, the new container terminal will be developed and run by the VICT after Philippine company ICTSI won the right to build and operate the port in May last year.
