MCS rail flyer service gains ground

Maritime Container Services' rail shuttle is adding flexibility and value to transport companies.

Maritime Container Services (MCS) says its new rail shuttle service has been steadily gaining customers since its May launch at DP World in Sydney.

With the rail siding now open at the Patrick terminal next door, the company is negotiating to expand the service into a second stevedoring operation.

Commercial rail manager for MCS John Karamanis says the expanding Sydney international container terminal is also in the company’s sights.

“It’s a service that will give transport operators of each stevedore an advantage,” he says.

The flyer service allows customers to transfer import and export containers directly to and from the MCS depot, from where a more flexible pick up and drop off window is available.

This allows for better use of truck resources and lets customers avoid having to book inflexible slots and their associated fees.

“It saves operators time and money and allows for better planning across the supply chain,” Karamanis says.

The company is maintaining two services per week to and from DP World Sydney, for both import and export containers. It has also extended its depot operation hours to allow more convenient pick up and drop of containers.

Karamanis says the service is adding value to all parts of the logistics industry in NSW.

“We feel the ability to rail containers to an offsite intermodal terminal, which can offer all the associated services, then distribute to the end user can only be a plus to the industry as a whole,” he says.
