East-west rail link set to reopen

Freight train services to resume after washout and derailment

One of the country’s key freight rail lines, which has been down since last week due to bad weather and derailments, will reopen tomorrow.

The line came to a standstill last Thursday when a train got derailed between Tarcoola and Malbooma in South Australia.

The east-west line was closed near Tarcoola whilst wagons were being removed and repairs undertaken.

Some of the stranded freight was picked up by trucking companies whilst cranes of up to 400 tonnes cleared wagons over the weekend and some 650 metres of truck was reconstructed.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) spokesman Bas Bolyn says the line will reopen in the afternoon.
