Aurizon in SAP system global first

Rail freight firm undertaking freight management transformation program dependent on SAP technology

Rail freight operator Aurizon will debut globally SAP’s newest freight management system, the IT firm says.

Involving SAP’s Supply Chain Execution Platform 9.1 and real-time SAP HANA, or High Performance Analytic Appliance for database management, the system “aims to provide Aurizon with an integrated freight and yard management solution”, SAP says.

The move is part of Aurizon’s freight management transformation program, which is heavily dependent on SAP technology.

“Aurizon looked for an integration freight solution to replace a collection of legacy and customised applications,” Aurizon Executive Vice President Enterprise Services Greg Pringle says.

“This SAP solution is a logical extension on our investment in SAP ERP and Asset Maintenance.”

“SAP came to the table with a global team of rail experts and worked closely with us throughout the process to understand our perspective and business requirements, which ultimately allowed them to conceptualise and scope the solution we have now begun to implement.”

While the system as constructed is new, SAP HANA has already had an outing with Russian Railways, which operates freight and passenger services.

The new technology system and services aim to provide end-to-end visibility across the supply chain process, integrating long and short-term planning with resource availability and customer demand.

Upon implementation, the system offers the ability for Aurizon to improve planning and scheduling and product tracking, supported by near real-time reporting, enabling Aurizon to improve on-time delivery and operational decision making, SAP says.

Aurizon’s customers can benefit from improved visibility and traceability through a portal allowing customers to manage orders and invoicing, view consignment status, and integrated track and trace capabilities enabled for mobile devices.
