Dubai, the Emirate that brought you the world's tallest building and a string of other mega projects, will now open the world's biggest cargo terminal.
Phase one of Dubai World Central (DWC), Emirates’ SkyCargo terminal, will open at Al Maktoum International Airport in December 2014, with full completion slated for September 2014.
Once complete, Emirates will cement its position as one of the world's premier cargo airlines, and a major hub between Australia and Europe.
The terminal will feature a fully automated handling and storage system, and be able to process 700,000 tonnes of cargo in its first phase, with an additional 300,000 tonne capacity once fully operational.
Dubai Aviation City Corporation Executive Chairman Khalifa Al Zaffin says DWC will become the home of SkyCargo’s freighter operations.
"The company can expect to benefit significantly from the state-of-the-art infrastructure and unique strategic advantages offered by DWC," Al Zaffin says.
That infrastructure will include 46 truck docks, 80 truck parking spaces, and 12 aircraft stands directly in front of the terminal.
Emirates SkyCargo Senior Vice President Nabil Sultan says the new cargo terminal is progressing well.
"The relocation of our freighter fleet to DWC at Al Maktoum International Airport is an investment in our future," Sultan says.
"The logistics and cargo development at the airport is set to become a major global cargo hub once complete."
