June 2, 2013

Intermec and ecom instruments of Germany have teamed up to offer
a new intrinsically safe handheld mobile computer.

For use in hazardous environments the i.roc® Ci70 –Ex, is certified for oil refineries and drilling platforms, petrochemical, pharmaceutical production, agriculture processing and other explosion-classified environments.

Such explosive environments are among the harshest and most challenging environments in which to operate mobile computing and communications devices.

“With global certifications from IECEx, ATEX and NEC, the i.roc® Ci70 -Ex offers the widest range of global explosion-hazardous area approvals,” says Intermec Senior Vice President Mobile Solutions Business Unit Earl Thompson.

“It is a recognized Zone 1 device and fully compatible with applications originally developed for Intermec 70 series devices.”

The i.roc® Ci70 -Ex is also the first product offering resulting from the strategic partnership between Intermec and ecom instruments announced in December 2011.

Ecom instruments CEO and founder Rolf Nied says today’s mission-critical hazardous area operations demand mobile computing solutions that don’t compromise on current industry-leading technologies.

“Intermec and ecom combined their more than 40-year legacy of engineering expertise and innovation to integrate these state of the art technologies into this cutting-edge certified intrinsically safe handheld solution,” Nied says.

Key features of the i.roc® Ci70 -Ex include options:

  • Comprehensive wireless networking capabilities–including WWAN (3G CDMA or UMTS), WLAN (IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n), and Bluetooth 2.1 allow for flexible data exchange even in areas with challenging reception conditions
  • Advanced, long-range bar code imaging technology pioneered by Intermec and now adapted for certified intrinsically safe
    requirements
  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) capability is achieved through modular design that support a wide range of frequencies, from low to ultra-high LF to UHF and ISO Standard frequencies
  • A wide range of peripherals and accessories make the i.roc® Ci70 -Ex a truly complete enterprise business solution for the mining, petrochemical and energy industries
  • Windows Embedded Handheld on a 1 GHz processor allowing the infrastructure to support processer intensive asset management systems

The i.roc® Ci70 -Ex will be sold and distributed through ecom’s distribution channels, in Australia and New Zealand.
