Materials handling company Dematic has unveiled a new software product RapidVoice to enable
companies to
upgrade from RF picking to voice technology.

The solution is designed to take information already available on an RF screen, fill in the gaps necessary to create a voice transaction and increase the operation’s productivity without the need for any Warehouse Management System (WMS) or system changes.

RapidVoice is a standard out of the box software package which converts RF screens to voice dialog and adds any missing information such as ‘check digits’.

It can also verify information with a WMS to convert an operation to a hands-free, eyes-free work instruction that is easily understood and faster to work with.

Dematic Real Time Logistics division General Manager Nathan Taylor claims voice technology significantly enhances productivity compared to RF.

“It’s well-known that the majority of grocery and general merchandise retailers and packaged goods manufacturers in Australia and New Zealand, along with a host of wholesalers and 3PLs have benefited from voice picking technology,” Taylor says.

“By mapping RF screens, reviewing business processes and voice enabling operations, many companies can achieve dramatic increases in productivity compared with their current RF system.”

“The benefits are clear cut. Return on investment is highly appealing, even to the toughest CFO,” Taylor adds.

“As well as being simple and intuitive, voice creates a hands-free, eyes-free picking operation that is faster and safer,” Taylor says.

While many companies continue to use RF for picking because the task of implementing voice can be complex and costly, Taylor says RapidVoice eliminates the need to change your system.

“It also saves the need for a custom interface to allow a Voice trial. In the case where a legacy system cannot be touched, RapidVoice creates a production interface via the current RF terminal emulation screens,” he says.

Dematic is offering a limited number of RapidVoice pilots and is seeking to hear from companies who are currently looking at ways to improve the productivity of their RF picking operation.
