The former chief executive of the Australian Shipowners Association has been appointed to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) board.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese announced the appointment, saying Payne’s experience in the shipping industry will help AMSA fulfill its role.

“Mr Payne’s appointment will enhance AMSA’s vital role of promoting a strong, proactive safety culture within the maritime industry. His broad range of skills and experience will also be important to the organisation’s handling of issues such as crewing and seafarers’ qualifications and welfare,” Albanese says.

As well leading the Shipowners Association for more than 20 years, Albanese says Payne has also been a member of the International Shipping Federation and a former member of the AMSA Advisory Committee.

AMSA is the national maritime agency for providing safety, environmental protection and search and rescue services.
