Qantas now paperless in global freight initiative

Qantas says it has sent the first paperless air cargo shipment in Australia, part of a global push to paperless

Qantas says it has sent the first paperless air cargo shipment in Australia, part of a global push to paperless systems.

The airline has become the first in the country to participate in the international e-Freight program after Australia was endorsed by the Air Transport Association to join the initiative earlier this year.

The Association aims to have e-Freight live across the world in all locations by 2010.

Qantas Freight Executive General Manager Grant Fenn says it marks an important milestone for the Australian air freight industry and the end of paper-based processes.

“The ability to send paperless air cargo shipments will have significant financial and logistical benefits for the whole industry and will ultimately mean a faster and more secure service for customers,” he says.

“As an industry we are looking forward to the not-too-distant future where paperless cargo shipments are as common place as e-tickets for airline passengers.”

In line with IATA rules Qantas has trialled the technology on a number of shipments and has successfully sent a live shipment from Australia to Singapore.

Fenn says Qantas will “continue to lead the local industry” in adopting electronic shipments.
