SupplyChain Review columnist, former football umpire and all-round logistics sage David Doherty has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday honours list.

Doherty, the Chief Executive of the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA), has received the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia for services to supply chain and Australian football.

Doherty is a former umpire in the then Victorian Football League and remains a director of AFL Victoria.

As well as his work with the SCLAA, he serves as a member of the Australian Logistics Council and is a consultant to the logistics sector. Doherty says he’s unaware who nominated him for the honour but he’s “certainly very pleased”

Former Toll executive and long-time industry activist Brian Berwistle has also been honoured with an Order of Australia medal.

Bertwistle, former executive director of corporate services at Toll North, was recognised for his support of educational programs and driver and vehicle safety initiatives such as the TruckSafe accreditation program.

He remains active in developing marketing campaigns and training programs to promote the transport and logistics sector.

During his 49-year career in the transport industry, Bertwistle founded the Young People in Transport group, a section of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. He was also the founder and chairman of the Careers Forum, which aims to introduce certificate level transport training into high schools.

Viv Hanley, the Executive Director of the Australian Furniture Removers Association, and Andrew Wright, former Australian boss of truck manufacturer Paccar, were also honoured in the Queen’s Birthday list.
