EDITORIAL: Eddington maps out whats needed for Victorian logistics

The message from Sir Rod Eddington was blunt: fix the bottlenecks or undermine the future of the supply chain sector

The message from Sir Rod Eddington was blunt: fix the bottlenecks or undermine the future of the supply chain sector in Victoria.

In his comprehensive East West Link Needs Assessment report, the former British Airways CEO proposes the construction of a state-of-the-art intermodal terminal, port shuttles, an integrated road network to reduce congestion and a rail line dedicated to freight.

He says these projects, which form part of the $18 billion plan handed to Premier John Brumby last week, will free-up roads as well as streamline supply chain operations.

As Woolworths CEO Michael Luscombe says in the current edition of SupplyChain Review magazine, infrastructure development and transport planning is the most critical aspect of improving efficiency – and reducing carbon emissions – in the country’s retail chains.

The Eddington report, in Melbourne at least, is a comprehensive roadmap setting out key infrastructure priorities. But it requires government commitment and lots of cash.

The supply chain sector is one of the biggest contributors to the Victorian economy. It’s now clear what governments must do to maintain and enhance that contribution.
