LNG projects drive new towage JV

Western Australian marine services provider to the oil and gas industry Teekay Shipping has created a new joint venture company to capture growth in the Australian towage market.

KT Maritime Services Australia will pursue new business opportunities at both existing and greenfield terminal developments.

Teekay Shipping Managing Director David Parmeter says the Australian market for towage services is growing as new LNG projects begin production, adding to the ongoing growth in Australian coal and iron ore export shipments.

He says the deal formalises an existing
partnership between Teekay Shipping in Perth and Netherlands-based towage specialist KOTUG International BV.

Under the terms of the JV agreement, Teekay and KOTUG will both continue to separately manage respective existing operations in various Australian ports.

KOTUG CEO Ard-Jan Kooren says KOTUG has many years of practical and technical experience in the towage field, including the deployment of its highly-maneuverable RotorTug technology.

Teekay has operated in the Australian towage market at both Hay Point and Port Hedland where it currently manage 12 tugs and has experience with several KOTUG RotorTug vessels.

KT Maritime Services Australia Pty Ltd will be located in Perth, Australia where Business Development Manager Jamie Anderson will be responsible for sourcing potential customers.
