Linfox, Transurban partner to make Melbourne crossings easier

The corporate titans partnered with the Department of Transport and Planning to improve road network access for electric prime movers

Linfox has partnered with Transurban and the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning to further improve road network access for its fleet of Volvo electric prime movers.

Linfox says it is now better able to move essential goods across Melbourne and reduce inner city congestion as part of the partnership.

The transport titan is set to roll out 26 new Volvo electric prime movers across its Australian and New Zealand fleets over the next three year, with the new fleet partially funded by the federal government’s Driving the Nation fund.

When compared to a standard Volvo FM, the switch to a Volvo FM Electric can result in CO2 emissions savings of up to 65 tonnes per year when charging using renewable energy, according to Volvo’s environmental footprint calculator.

Linfox President Doug Fryer says the partnership will enable other fleets to more effectively implement electric trucks into their operations.

“We have established a trusted and positive relationship with Transurban and the Department of Transport and Planning,” Fryer says. “We are working together to achieve our common goal to improve sustainability across the logistics industry.

“This is a critical partnership which has allowed Linfox to optimise transport routes and provide customers with efficient and viable options for more sustainable deliveries.”

Linfox has labelled the partnership as a “significant achievement for the logistics industry” and that it will help “pave the way for the effective deployment of electric vehicles.

David Clements, Transurban Group Executive Operations, says electric trucks represent a key part of road freight’s future.

“Freight keeps our cities moving,” Clements says. “Electric trucks have a critical role to play in its future.

“This trial demonstrates what’s possible when industry and government come together to solve challenges and shape smarter, cleaner transport networks.”
